2014

Opening Address to Conference, “Challenges for Securing Growth and Share Prosperity in Latin America,” by Christime Lagarde, Managing Director, IMF, Santiago, Chile, 5 December 2014.  Available at: http://www.imf.org/external/np/speeches/2014/120514.htm.  This is an exciting time for Latin America, which has been stretching and renewing itself economically, politically, and socially in recent years.  The immense potential of this diverse region has become tangible and will drive further progress in years to come ― only the grumpiest pessimist would bet against its long-term success.

IMF Executive Board Approves 2-Year US$17 Billion Stand-By Arraingement for Ukraine, US$3l19 Billion for Immediate Disbursement, Press Release no. 13/189, 30 April 2014.  Available at: http://www.imf.org/external/np/sec/pr/2014/pr14189.htm.  The press release includes an evaluation of recent economic conditions in Ukraine.

Sustaining Asia’s Momentum: Time for Vigilance and Reform, IMF Survey Magazine, Regional Economic Outlook, 28 April 2014.  GDP growth is forecast to improve to 5.5 percent in 2014–15, says the IMF in its latest Asia and Pacific Regional Economic Outlook, but risks lie ahead.

Fiscal Policy and Income Inequality: Speech by David Lipton, 13 March 2014 at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, Washington, DC.  Available at: http://www.imf.org/external/np/speeches/2014/031314.htm.  The speech summarises recent research at the IMF on fiscal instruments that are often used for the purpose of reducing government deficits and debt accumulation.

Fiscal Policy and Income Inequality: Staff Report on Fiscal Policy, 22 January 2014.  Available at: http://www.imf.org/external/np/pp/eng/2014/012314.pdf.  The report focuses on four aspects of fiscal policy and income inequality: (i) recent trends in the inequality of income, wealth, and opportunity in advanced and developing economies; (ii) country experience with different fiscal instruments for redistribution; (iii) options for the reform of expenditure and tax policies to help achieve distributive objectives in an efficient manner that is consistent with fiscal sustainability; and (iv) recent evidence on how fiscal policy measures can be designed to mitigate the impact of fiscal consolidation on inequality.

Australia: Staff Report for the 2013 Article IV Consultation, 12 February 2014.  Available at: http://www.imf.org/external/pubs/ft/scr/2014/cr1451.pdf.  Article IV consultations usually take place once a year when IMF economists visit the member country to gather information and hold discussions with government and central bank officials, and often private investors and labour representatives, members of parliament, and civil society organizations.  The result of these consultations is submitted to the IMF’s Executive Board for discussion and the results of that discussion are made available to the country’s authorities.  The report should therefore viewed as a compilation of the in-country views combined with those of the IMF staff and executive.

Available at: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2013/06/05/imf-our-greek-bailout-was-full-of-notable-failures/?hpid=z3.  The ex-post evaluation referred to in the article is available online at: http://www.imf.org/external/pubs/ft/scr/2013/cr13156.pdf.
