Last updated 3 December 2015 Links to articles prior to January 2013 are
available at: http://www.accci.com.au/G20_before_Jan_2013.htm. The G20 is an informal group of 19 countries and the European Union,
with representatives of the International Monetary
Fund, the World Bank and the World Trade Organisation. The finance ministers and central bank
governors began meeting in 1999, at the suggestion of the G7 finance
ministers. It rose to prominence in
November 2008 when the then French President Sarkozy and the then UK Prime
Minister Gordon Brown called a meeting of the G20 leaders, known as the
Summit, in response to the global financial crisis of 2007-2009. The G20 superseded the Group of 33
industrialised countries, which superseded the Group of 22 countries (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G-20_major_economies). Since
its formation there has been a G20 finance
ministerial meeting every year, but it has no formal structure and no
permanent administrative personnel. It
therefore cannot be classified as an institution, or even as a formal
organisation. Its members are
nevertheless critical in determining global governance and this determination
is certain to be of fundamental importance to Australia-China relations. It is for this reason that we created a page of links to
economic and political information about those 19 member states and
representatives of the three intergovernmental organisations plus the
President of the European Council. The
links relate to information about the members to a greater extent than
information about the group of members.
Links to information about the group of members is managed by the
