Introduction:


The following list of Internet sources is maintained by the Australia-China Chamber of Commerce and Industry of New South Wales for the purpose of assisting in obtaining information about China from Web sites.  The listing is updated on a regular basis with a view to adding to the list and incorporating modifications made by the various sites.  See the disclaimer at the end of this page regarding the contents of the Web sites.


News and Current Evets:


Asia Today International contains information about China as well as other Asian countries.  Barry and Florence Pearton, the publishers, have been friends of the Chamber for many years. http://www.asiatodayinternational.com

China Daily is one of China's leading newspaper in English and the web site offers an Internet version of the daily news dispatches. http://chinadaily.com.cn/

People’s Daily is the official Party newspaper with an English-language version.  http://english.peopledaily.com.cn/90002/96417/6684316.html

South China Morning Post is the leading English language newspaper in Hong Kong.  The Internet version includes a special section with articles about China.  http://www.scmp.com/portal/site/SCMP/

Hong Kong Standard has an alternative viewpoint for local Hong Kong news, as well as for China.  It is part of the Singtao Internet site. www.thestandard.com.hk.

China News Digest is operated by a non-profit organisation in the USA.  The news briefs are compiled by Chinese students, including news items from Taiwan.  http://www.cnd.org


Chinese History
and Culture:

 


China the Beautiful
is a web page edited by Dr. Ming. L. Pei.  This is a storehouse of information on classical Chinese art, calligraphy, poetry, history, literature, painting and philosophy.  The material was supplied by numerous scholars and recognised authorities.  Some pages require software that accepts Chinese characters.  “Flash cards" are available for an introduction to the Chinese language, with sound to assist in pronunciation.  http://www.chinapage.com/china.html

Brief History of China, by Paul Frankenstein is a popular reference to China's history and is now updated with graphics and links to other sources.  http://www-chaos.umd.edu/history/welcome.html

National Palace Museum in Taipei is in the process of putting reproductions of its 620,000 artifacts into digital form for the Internet.  As is generally known, the collection of Chinese art in the museum is extensive.  It has heaps of graphics files and sound so downloading takes some time.  http://www.npm.gov.tw

Background Notes: China, are released periodically by the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs, U.S. Department of State.  They contain current facts and figures, but also have a good summary of historical events.  Look for “Countries and Regions” on the main page. http://www.state.gov


Analyses and Data:


World Bank's China Update is released periodically by the Resident Mission in Beijing.  They give a reasonably complete summary of current economic conditions and development issues in China.  Use the URL below to visit the World Bank's home page.  Select "Regions and Countries" and then specify "China" in the selection window.  Note that the World Bank also have an Internet site in China.  http://www.worldbank.org

Hong Kong Trade Development Council maintains regular market profiles on the Chinese mainland, which includes information about the overall economy.  Look under “China Trade” on the main page.  http://www.tdctrade.com/

Australia Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, has background information as well as detailed analyses by the East Asia Analytical Unit and AusAID.  http://www.dfat.gov.au. 

Asian Development Bank maintains a statistical database for all of its member developing countries, including China, Hong Kong SAR and Taiwan (referred to as Taipei, China).  The site also lists ADB publications, including “Asian Development Outlook” and gives details of current projects for which loans have been approved.  http://www.adb.org

Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) has several sites, but the most useful one for recent developments about the organisation and member countries is maintained by the Secretariat in Singapore.  Links with other related sites are featured.  http://www.apecsec.org.sg

Chinese Embassy maintains an Internet site that includes a variety of news and topical information with links to government agencies in China.  http://www.chinaembassy.org.au The Chinese Consulate in Sydney also has an Internet site.  http://www.chinaconsulatesyd.org.  The page with links to ministries and government departments is in convenient form.


Internet Sources in China:


Chinese Internet sites are expanding rapidly.  The links supplied on the Chinese Embassy and Consulate Internet pages mentioned immediately above are particularly good. 

The Chamber is beginning to compile Internet sites for cities and provinces and include them in our key cities section.

China Chamber for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) is also known as the China Chamber of International Commerce (CCOIC). The Internet site contains a listing of trade fairs and exhibitions as well as a summary of recent commercial information relating to China. http://www.ccpit.org
