Assignments such as tax, audit or special overseas
work may be carried out by particularly qualified people within the firm but
the client relationship remains through the partner and the client. “Large” organisations are departmentalised and are
invariably serviced by a “large” accounting firm, which in turn has its own
departments. Both the client and the
accounting firm endure regular staff turnover which means an ongoing
relationship between organisations, not people. Our experience shows that there is
a great level of disappointment when our SME clients have had to deal with a
large accounting firm overseas. Accordingly we are establishing affiliations with
firms similar to our own both nationally and internationally. These are affiliations where we actually
meet the partners in the other firms and establish a personal
relationship. To date we have associations in Singapore, Malaysia
and India. We will shortly be meeting with firms in Hong Kong. Our Malaysia affiliate is currently making
contacts in Vietnam. Nationally we
are making similar connections. |

In the designated export country we can offer a
personal connection with an accounting firm which can deal with them at the
grass roots level in matters tax, accounting, legal structures and
importantly in local business customs.
We can stay in contact with both them and our affiliate to help them
through the accounting and tax issues that invariably arise. With this approach we can save clients
valuable time and money as their normal alternatives have to be to go in cold,
or to go to one of the big names firms where they are too small to get the
service they require at a reasonable cost. SME’s do not have the luxury of multiple failures
before they get it right. Nor can
they afford to ignore the developing markets to our north. We aim to assist them in their entry to
these markets and as far as possible avoid the pitfalls. Obviously China is seen as an opportunity for many
businesses, but as you are no doubt aware there are many traps for the
unwary. We appreciate your comments
on China. Our thinking so far has
been to make sure that the firm we affiliate with in Hong Kong has some
active contacts in China, however you may be of the opinion that we should
make our own direct links. We would
appreciate your views on which approach we should take |
